Which Dog Breeds Are Best for Singles?

Dog-Breeds-for-Singles-300x199Are you single and looking for a four-legged companion? Well, you can’t go wrong with a dog! Sure, cats are great and hamsters are adorable, but for honest-to-goodness loyalty and affection, a dog is a perfect choice. While all dog breeds offer something special, here are a few whose wet noses might poke perfectly into your single life.

English Bulldog ~ Don’t be fooled by this compact breed’s tough exterior; behind those wrinkles and adorable overbite is a tender, patient dog waiting to bond with you. Don’t have a lot of time to exercise a dog? Not to worry ~ low impact, short walks are good enough for this breed, they are prone to joint problems and over-exercising can result in serious ailments. Looking for a couch buddy to hang out and watch football with on Sunday afternoons? You’ll hear no arguments from an English Bulldog! They’re known for their lazy ways and frequent nap taking.

Australian Cattle Dog ~ If your idea of relaxing after a day at work is running five miles, then the Australian Cattle Dog may be more your speed. And speed is the accurate term, as this energetic and intelligent herding breed will have no problem keeping up as your running partner. This breed loves nothing better than an activity that provides an outlet for physical and mental energy.

Bichon Frise ~ If sheer cuteness was the only quality you were looking for in a dog breed, the soft, fluffy Bichon Frise would win hands down. But the Bichon Frise has more going on than just good looks. Along with being inquisitive and sociable, the Bichon Frise is hypoallergenic; a quality which comes in handy should someone come into your life who’s allergic to dogs.

As well, the Bichon Frise is easy to live with; the breed is cheerful, pleasant, enjoys playing games, snuggling into laps and pillows, and perching on the back of the sofa so he can peer out the window. And the Bichon’s exercise needs are easy to meet: a daily walk or two, plus a small yard in which to trot around and stretch his legs.

Great Dane ~ This breed is gentle and quiet, often referred to as the ‘gentle giant,’ and perfect for the single person who studies or works from home. Plus, their commanding presence will make you feel safer (no one needs to know your dog is a total love bug!) and they will certainly draw friendly attention at the dog park or your local coffee shop.

Any of these breeds, or even a mystery mix mutt, will add excitement and richness to your life. One thing, though, to keep in mind as a single pet parent is, while you’re at work, your canine friend will be spending much of his or her day alone. This is no problem as long as you remember to take precautions. Leave the radio or television on to make the house feel less empty and help alleviate any sense of loneliness. Before you leave for work, ensure your pooch has plenty of dog appropriate chews and toys to occupy his time. And, of course, don’t forget to give your pooch a good morning walk.
